Representation of Reginal Identity

Regional Identity:
identifying a persons identity which is rooted not only in the setting of a film but also in the speech, costumes etc and the region they live.

Identifying Regional Identity:
  • setting
  • accents
  • dialogue
  • props
  • make up
  • class of characters
P.E.E
Shameless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwaxunnAvdo&NR=1
In this clip of Shameless, the audience can probably gather the regional identity of the characters through their accents. Its clear that they are from Manchester, and the setting reveals that its a run down council estate. This helps the audience in indentifying with the characters more as they know where they come from and what to 'expect' in the programme being on a council estate.

The Only Way Is Essex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX7eENeraGc
From this trailer of The Only Way is Essex, through the makeup, costumes and props used in it the audience would assume that the regional identity of the characters is quite upper class and posh, until later when we hear their accents when they start shouting. Most assets of the mise-en-scene help to protray the class of the characters; the females are wearing long, elegant dresses with pristene makeup and the males are in smart suits. The idea of being upper class may come from the expensive, stylish spprts car one character is driving.

Made in Chelsea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnG0Bkzxg6Q
The regional identity of this programme is very clear through accents and setting. Their accents are very pronounced and posh and it being set in the wealthy area of Chelsea helps show that. Even though this clip involves different scenes of the programme the dialogue is related to each other making it easy to see that the characters involved all know eachother, which maybe shows that its a small area as they all know each others business.
